Queen Elizabeth II Turns 90 In Gloucester
Marketing Gloucester is happy to announce the events celebrating Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th Birthday in Gloucester. There will be a mix of celebrations to honour the 90th birthday of our Queen, with events such as beacon lighting, city dressing and street celebrations. Marketing Gloucester also want individuals and businesses to get involved and suggest their own ideas on how to celebrate the special occasion.
Gloucester will be celebrating her majesty’s ‘actual’ birthday, on the 21st of April, by setting alight to beacons on Robinswood Hill overlooking Gloucester for everyone to see and enjoy. The city will also be dressed in Union Flags in order provide a jubilant atmosphere of the day.
Stage two of the celebrations, the Queens official birthday on the 12th of June will see Gloucester hosting a street party in her honour, to coincide with the giant festive street party being held on The Mall in London. Jack Wakefield from Marketing Gloucester says “We’re excited to organise a street party here in Gloucester, especially one celebrating such a great milestone”. The festivities will include music, dancing and city dressing, bringing the whole community together for the celebrations
The Queen celebrates her birthday twice each year. Her ‘actual’ birthday is on the day she was born, on the 21st of April, and is mostly spent in private but is celebrated by gun salutes throughout central London at midday. The Queen’s ‘official’ birthday is on the 28th of May and is when other members of the royal family join her for the spectacular Trooping the Colours parade which moves between Buckingham Palace, The Mall and Horseguards Parade.
Paul James, leader of the Gloucester City Council told us “Gloucester has a long and illustrious tradition of honouring the monarch’s birthday, as well as holding many links with the Royal Family stretching back to Anglo-Saxon times. It is only fitting that we as a city pay tribute to Her Majesty on the occasion of her 90th birthday”.
