{"id":190,"date":"2013-07-01T10:14:56","date_gmt":"2013-07-01T09:14:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.abbeyviews.com\/wordpress\/?p=190"},"modified":"2013-07-01T10:14:56","modified_gmt":"2013-07-01T09:14:56","slug":"what-did-the-romans-ever-do-for-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.abbeyviews.com\/wordpress\/?p=190","title":{"rendered":"What did the Romans ever do for us?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\">Two sets of summer tours will throw the spotlight on Gloucester\u2019s 2,000 years of history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\">Both based around a Roman \u2018theme\u2019 the first tour will take people under the City streets into the Eastgate Chamber\u00a0 &#8211; outside Boots in Eastgate Street &#8211; while the second tour will be a leisurely stroll around the City itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\">Both take place during July and August and are organized by the City Council\u2019s Museum Service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\">The Eastgate Chamber tours will take place at 12pm every Wednesday with visitors meeting at the nearby City Museum. Lasting around 30 minutes they will give a close up look at substantial pieces of Roman Wall that contain murals that depict how and why the wall was built. The chamber also contains a section of the City\u2019s medieval wall \u2013 a gate tower dating back to the 1250s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\">Tickets priced at \u00a33 for adults and \u00a32 concessions (over 60s) with under fives free, can be purchased on the day at the museum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\">The Roman Gloucester tours take place every second Friday at 11.30am and (starting July 5) led by Civic Trust Guides. They will be a leisurely stroll around Gloucester with important Roman features pointed out along the route. Tickets are priced at \u00a34 adults, \u00a33 concessions (over 60s) with Under fives free and can be purchased at the City Museum on the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\">Council Leader Paul James, commented: \u201c Gloucester was a \u2018colonia\u2019 and enjoyed the highest status in the Empire. The history is fascinating and both of these tours will certainly be worth doing.
