27/2/09 New bridges will reduce flood risks

Work to replace two bridges - and reduce the threat of flooding - is due to get underway in Abbeydale next week.

The bridges in question cross the River Twyver behind the local Community centre and provide a link to a cycleway and footpaths leading from the community centre and Morrison's towards Longborough Drive and Bittern Avenue.

Gloucestershire County Council is replacing them with two steel bridges.

As the new structures have a shallower cross-section and sit higher above the watercourse, they should help reduce the effect of some flooding.

Funding is being provided by a partnership involving Gloucestershire County Council and Gloucester City Council.

Local city and county councillor Andrew Gravells said, "I have asked for this work to be done to reduce the risk of flooding to the Abbeydale Community Centre and nearby homes.

"The close  co-operation between the City and County councils on this scheme has been good, and I'm pleased that this work will soon be underway."

Work is due to start on Tuesday (3rd March) with the construction of temporary scaffolding bridges for use by the public while the new structures are built.

The work is scheduled to take up to three weeks and people are advised to avoid the area as heavy machinery will be in operation.
