28/7/07 City Council Flood Update

Flood Update Saturday July 28th 2007

· In view of the severe weather warnings for tonight residents are being reminded that they have a responsibility for protecting their own homes and property.

· A total of nearly 900 properties that have been flooded in the course of the past few weeks are today being assessed by council workmen to see if the protection they have is sufficient.

· In an emergency the council will try and respond to any other requests for help where property is in imminent risk of flooding.

· GL1 leisure centre is on standby for use as a rest centre.

· Joint teams of police and environmental health officers have been touring food outlets, pubs, clubs and takeaways to ensure that adequate health and safety measures are in place to enable them to continue operating.

· The teams will close down any operation that doesn’t meet sufficient standards to ensure public safety.

· Three giant 18,000 litre army water tankers are currently stationed at:

o Sainsbury - Barnwood

o Former B&Q site at Bruton Way

o Nine Elms Road - Elmbridge

· They are available for public use and are scheduled to be there until 8.00pm. They may be moved to other areas of greater need at short notice.

· Critical health information for residents is detailed below.

 

When cleaning your home before the water supply has been restored

Unless you are able to arrange a delivery of water to enable you to ensure an adequate supply of hot water you are advised to contact a cleaning contractor to carry out the cleansing of your home.

When water supply returns:

DO NOT drink the water even after boiling or use it for food preparation, washing dishes, ice making, cleaning your teeth, baby feeds.

 

When returning to your home after it has been flooded:-

Beware, your electricity supply may need checking, call Central Networks emergency help line 0800 096 1104.

Turn off the gas supply to appliances that have been flooded and get the system checked by a CORGI registered engineer

Call the fire Rescue Service on 01452 729340 before attempting to pump water from your premises.

When cleaning up after the flood

Do not start unless it is safe to do so.

Contact your insurance company

Wear protective clothing (waterproof boots, gloves, aprons and protective eyewear) and cover up cuts with waterproof plasters

Thoroughly wash your hands after being in contact with flood water or damaged items and wash hands before eating or preparing food.

Keep children and pets out of flood water and avoid them coming into contact with contaminated articles and surfaces.

Do not use outdoor gas/petrol/diesel devices indoors as this can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Chemical pollution may have occurred with materials stored in sheds and garages, treat with special care.

Discard all damaged food. Any flood damaged garden or allotment vegetables should not be harvested for 2 weeks and then only consume after thorough washing and cooking.

Thoroughly ventilate enclosed spaces

Discard clothes and items that are beyond repair or cannot be properly cleansed

Thoroughly clean surfaces with hot water and detergent.

Wash contaminated clothes and soft fabric items separately from other items in a hot wash (60 degrees centigrade) For items that need drycleaning advise the laundry service that the items have been contaminated with flood water.
