ABBEYDALE POST OFFICE TO CLOSE- WE WILL FIGHT TO STOP THIS.
We were very angry when we heard on June 25th 2004 that Morrisons- the new owners of Safeways- intend to close the Post Office in Abbeydale.
We only heard this news in a roundabout way- and it was quite a snub to the local community here that the company didn't have the decency to tell us themselves of their plans.
We have written to the Company's Chairman Sir Ken Morrison asking him to halt these plans, and we have written to Royal Mail too.
We have been out collecting names for a massive petition which we've handed into Morrisons.
March 2005 Update
There are still Operators interested in taking over the Running of the Post Office from Morrisons. We are talking every week to Morrisons Head Office and Post Office Ltd to try to move things forwward. In early March we had a letter from the Government Minister with responsibility for Post Offices, in which he declined to meet us. So much for Govenrment committment to help us keep open the Abbeydale Post Office.
