Safeways secured Planning permission for their new store in October 2002, subject to a couple of minor issues being resolved between the city council, Safeways and the bus company Stagecoach.
All of us want to see Safeways begin work as soon as possible on the site
Your Abbey ward councillors are frequently in touch with Safeways Head Office Staff, who are always very helpful and very polite.
Safeways tell us that they are carrying on with their plans to build a new store here.
May 2003-the company tell us work is on hold, as badgers have been found on site.
Badgers are a protected animal.
January 2005
Work begins at last. The old Units are demolished and work begins to build the new ones. The New Morrisions supermarket is expected to open in November 2005.This is excellent news for Abbeydale. Co-operation between us and Morrisons staff, especially their Head Ofice staff is good, and the company are responsive to points we put to them
This latest news is a blow to all of us who want to see the work begin here
We will keep you updated on this website and in Abbey Views.
Now that Morrisions have acquired the Company, we have written to their Chairman Sir Ken Morrision urging him to tell us what plans Morrisions have for this store.
We have told Sir Ken that the store needs updating and the whole site tidied up
